Bruno tossed and turned more than usual that night. He normally slept deeply in the king-sized down-filled mattress, feeling as if he was floating on a cloud. But on this night, sleep was not his friend. He turned off the television and closed his eyes, trying to think of pleasant things that made him smile, like the look on his partner’s face when he told him that he’d won an acquittal in the latest case. His mind drifted to the boat that he was planning to buy; he could already feel the spray of water on his face as he navigated across the Detroit River. In his imagination, his son sat next to him the co-driver’s seat as he pointed out the controls on the dashboard and asked if he wanted to take the wheel. Bruno Jr.’s eyes lit up and he stood to switch seats with his dad – when the boat suddenly lurched to the side and Bruno Jr. fell over into the water, screaming.
Bruno jumped up from his seat and tried unsuccessfully to catch his hand before he disappeared under the edge of the boat. He could hear the ominous thud as the boat bumped over his son’s head.
Bruno woke with a jerk and a scream lodged in his throat. Shivering, he kicked off the damp sheets and every nerve in his body screamed at the shock of the cold air hitting his skin. He rolled out of bed, teeth chattering, and scooted across the wood floor to the robe hanging on the closet door.
He stood there in the dark, hugging himself and trying to generate some warmth from the robe and the friction of his hands. The dream had frightened him; he hadn’t had a nightmare in a good many years, and this one was so vivid and terrifying. He picked up his cellphone and dialed the number to reach his son.
“Hey, Dad,” a sleepy voice answered.
“Oh, hey, kiddo,” Bruno relaxed and exhaled slowly at the sound of his son’s voice.
“How ‘ya doing, son?”
“I’m fine, I was sleeping – what’s up, Dad?”
“Oh, nothing, I’m sorry, I didn’t realize it was so late. I just wanted to chat a bit. I’ll let you get back to sleep.”
“Everything okay?”
“Sure! Sure thing! Everything’s fine! I just woke up to take a leak and figured I’d call now before I got busy and forgot,” Bruno looked at his right hand and saw that it was still shaking. He stuck it into the pocket of his robe.
When he was certain that Bruno Jr. was fine he ended the call and sat on the edge of the bed, thinking about his dream. It seemed so real that he could still hear the sound of the waves of water sloshing against the side of the boat.
In fact, it seemed as if the splashing water was coming from the master bath just a few steps away from the bed. Had he left the water running before he fell asleep? He pushed the bathroom door
